Update Guide

Updates can be performed from Buildroot to Yocto and from Yocto to Yocto. The same update procedure applies to both transitions.

After preparing the USB drive, install the updater package as described below. The updater handles the rest of the update process.

Run the command for the OS currently installed on the display. If you are unsure which OS is running, use OS Differences to identify it. Replace X.X.X with the version in the updater package filename.

Terminal window
opkg install /media/usb0/updates/all/yocto-os-updater-X.X.X.ipk

The Yocto root filesystem is read-only by default, so remount it read-write for the installation and restore it to read-only afterward:

Terminal window
mount -o remount,rw / \
&& dpkg -i /run/media/sda1/updates/all/yocto-os-updater-X.X.X.deb \
&& mount -o remount,ro /

When the command finishes, turn the display off and continue with Finish Installation.

  1. Turn the display back on. The screen will be black. This is expected and normal.
  2. The update process takes a few minutes to complete.
  3. Wait for the display’s buzzer to start beeping. This is the signal that the update is finished.
    • If you hear the lower-pitched tone, the update was a success!
    • If you hear the high-pitched tone, see the troubleshooting FAQs.
  4. If the update succeeded, cycle power and then wait for the device to boot to resume normal operations.
    • The OS runs one-time startup jobs the first time it boots after an update. This process can take up to 5 minutes. If the device has not booted within 5 minutes, see the troubleshooting FAQs.
